Naval Tradition Grove

On Wednesday, 20 January 2021, the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Mr. AlkiviadisStefanis, on behalf of the Hellenic State, and Mr. Aris Theodoridis, Chairman of the Non-Profit Organization of Drama CYCLOPS, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation for the creation of a space showcasing the timeless relationship of the Greeks with the sea, in the area of Flisvos, in Paleo Faliro.

The purpose is to create building facilities that will host exhibits and digital content, tracing the entire course of the Greeks’ relationship with the sea, from antiquity up to this day. Construction is set to begin in 2021, with expected implementation in 2024, on a 22-acre site in Flisvos, in the area where the historic Hellenic Navy ships, the battleship “Averof” and the destroyer “Velos” are currently located.

The project is set to receive the support and cooperation of the competent Ministries, the Greek shipping community, and the participation of the private sector. In this way, the history of the Naval and Merchant Marine, as well as of all those who have embraced the sea through their professional or amateur activity, will gain its own modern venue where the art, tradition, and future of seamanship will be showcased, along with the deep bond of our people with the sea.
